Impact Investment Fund launches: a new $100 million socially-conscious Aussie start-up fund

The constrained Australian venture capital industry is about to receive a $100 million infusion earmarked forcompanies that promise to do good for society or the environment. 

The Impact Investment Fund is the brainchild of Sydney-based social investor Geoff Gourley, entrepreneur and multimillionaire financial planner Julio De Laffitte and Southbank Capital, a Melbourne-based investment advisory firm.

Crowdfunding site Tugg, which enables people to decide which movies screen at their local cinemas, has landed in Australia. 

Launched by Nicolas Gonda and Pablo Gonzalez, the platform has been operating in the US market since 2012 where it has managed to attract about 500,000 patrons across 4,500 movie screenings.

"In Australia you're getting it wrong, and it will not only hurt your long-term returns but also the prospects of the country. I want to invigorate your investors to take start-ups seriously," Mr Ressi told Fairfax Media.

He said the limited risk appetite was so systematic it was even present in some of Australia's prolific start-up investment groups, which loaded terms in their favour when dealing with new companies.
